SANO DI PIETRO, «ASSUNZIONE DELLA VERGINE», 1440 CIRCA, SIENA, PINACOTECA.
This small-format work, intended for private devotion and painted with extreme finesse, is a precious jewel, dripping with gold, in colors similar to those of the enamels of a piece of silverware.
The old attributions, sometimes to Sassetta, sometimes to the Master of Observance, are a praise to the perfection of the work. This painting is an additional clue in favor of the thesis of art historians who make the Master of Observance a fiction under which the young Sano di Pietro hides.
The Virgin Mary ascends to heaven sitting in an almond tree, according to the ancient model updated by Simone Martini in the "Assumption" of the Antiporto di Camollia, and then resumed, for at least a century and a half, by number of his Sienese successors.
Around her, musical angels accompany the Virgin more than they win in this ascending movement. These angels are arranged symmetrically around Mary. All have delicately pink-tinted cheeks and have a wonderful mother-of-pearl complexion.
Remaining on the ground, several spectators look up at the sky to observe the miracle. Among them is the incredulous Thomas, in the center, collecting the belt the Virgin had just thrown at him as proof of his ascension to heaven. Around him, Saints Nicholas, Bartholomew, John the Baptist, Peter, Luke and Jerome.

Where we will see how the invisible presence of Christ is manifested in the work.
Where one explains what elements of the work the comparison is with a work of goldsmith and miniaturist.
Where one specifies what an almond tree is and how the meaning of the word “mandorla” in Italian reinforces its meaning.
Hence one will access an article on the model of the “Assumption” set by Simone Martini and taken up in Siena for one hundred and fifty years.
Where it is explained why this work predates 1444, the date of the “Polittico dei Gesuati” of Sano di Pietro.

Assumption Abbey, located in Richardton, North Dakota, is a Benedictine abbey of the American-Cassinese Congregation (different from the Subiaco Cassinese Congregation), founded in 1893 by a monk of the Swiss abbey of Einsiedeln.
History[edit]
The North Dakota community became a conventual priory on February 18, 1894. Originally called St. Gall’s, the monks relocated from the north shore of Devils Lake to the city of Richardton on June 24, 1899, and changed the name to St. Mary’s Priory.
In 1903 the Holy See raised the community to the rank of abbey and Vincent dePaul Wehrle, the founder, was elected first abbot. On October 29, 1928, the community and its property was incorporated under the title Assumption Abbey. By decree of the Holy See, the Abbey was transferred from the Swiss-American Congregation[1] to the American-Cassinese Congregation[2] on October 18, 1932.
As of December 2009, there were 56 monks in the community. Assumption Abbey has a dependent daughter monastery in Bogotá, Colombia: Monasterio Benedictino de Tibatí which runs the prestigious Colegio San Carlos.
